Capilano Rugby Football Club Alumni Association

January 22, 2018

Alumni Greetings to all members, friends and families of players……….

The 2018 spring rugby season is about to begin and we look forward to another exciting year of Capilano Rugby. Our membership tenure now covers the calendar year rather than the fall – spring season as in the past. The alumni membership has levelled off over the past few years so we ask for your help in bolstering our numbers. Phone those old friends and talk to them about joining the Capilano Alumni Association. Our definition of “Alumni” is quite broad; you don’t need to have played the game – parents, partners, and other supporters are all welcome. The benefits are rewarding and you know that your yearly fee is being used to promote the game among our young players here at home.

This new Club Constitution has been approved and ensures that the Club is covered both legally and financially under the latest review of the Society’s Act of B.C. As Alumni we are identified in the Constitution along with the rights, privileges and obligations of being a member in good standing. These rights and privileges come at a price. A price which reflects an ongoing contribution by the Alumni as a viable entity within the dynamic of our great Club. Therefore your Alumni Committee believe that our fees of $125 ensures that the rights and privileges of the Alumni are further entrenched in the Club’s future. As with most things these days, the costs associated with supporting and running a rugby club have increased and we feel that our fee structure represents good value.

2018 Alumni Membership Fee of $125 entitles you to:
·       voting member status of CRFC
·        admission to all Capilano home games and use of the clubrooms
·        invitation to supporter luncheons at the clubhouse
·        regular communication about upcoming activities
·        get involved in club-wide fund-raising projects that benefit the players

Our main thrust again will be to help facilitate player development under the auspices of the STORMY EXCHANGE PROGRAM which was originally set up to send young players, both men and women, to New Zealand and Australia, to help sponsor incoming import players, and to provide extra assistance to our home-grown players who are working towards provincial and national representation. The program has become the envy of many clubs in BC and the rest of Canada but we continue to look for new and improved ways to aid the club in player development. The Alumni believe that strong coaching is a key to the development of Capilano players and we are happy to support the new coaching staff under the direction of former Capilano and National Team player Garth Prouse. We see this as a significant step in club and player development and, as such, we will continue to develop and expand the STORMY EXCHANGE PROGRAM to better reflect all aspects of player development.

The main source of our funding is the membership dues of which 50% goes to the Club Executive to cover club privileges and grandstand admission and the remaining 50% goes toward Alumni projects, including: the Player Recognition Fund to help support junior and senior men and women provincial and national representative selections; sponsorship of off-field fitness-strength training programs; any specific player-funding requests that emerge each season; and the administration of the Jimmy Morris/Ozzie Gjerdalen Scholarship. In addition we have committed to the Club Executive to help out any way that we can in proposed club-wide fund raising that will specifically target club and Rep player support and development.

The spring schedules for both men and women are available on the BCRU website http://www.bcrugby.com/ The Premier competition for the Men’s teams began this past weekend to be followed by another away game in Victoria on January 27. The women’s Premiers also start the season with 2 away games on the Island.

The first full slate of home games is scheduled for Saturday, February 3, men versus Provincial Champion UBC and women versus perennial rival Burnaby Lake RFC. The Premier men have 2 more home games in the month, Feb 17 vs Seattle RFC and Feb 24 vs James Bay AA. No home games are scheduled for the Premier women in February.

The always much-anticipated Alumni Lunch(es) are set to kickoff at the first home game, Feb 3 vs UBC to be followed by a second bonus lunch on March 24 as we welcome Nanaimo RFC back to the Premier League. The tentative menu is chili for the first one and old favorite sausages for the second, both to be accompanied by complimentary wine of your choice (choice being limited to red or white).
